College Triumph at Loch an Iuir

The College has won the Ulster Colleges B final of the Loch An Iuir Cup.

It has been 25 years since they have played at this level.

The team had been in an unbeaten run in the group stages  with victories over St Louis Kilkeel, St Pius Magherafelt, Colaiste Cholmcille Ballyshannon and Strabane High School.  They beat a very tough Carrickmacross team in the quarter final to play the competition favourites St Paul’s Bessbrook in the semi final.

St Paul’s took an early lead in the semi from a free kick but the sharpness of the College’s forwards put a permanent end to this with seven unanswered points from Scott and McGarry who were scoring with ease.  This was compounded with a fine goal from Odhran Eastwood and the halftime score was 1:8 to 0:2.  St Paul’s never really recovered and the final score was a convincing 2:22 to 0:05.

The final against St Eunan’s was a much closer affair and though the College lead for most of the match St Eunans scored a goal in the last three minutes to put them one point ahead.  However the team didn’t lose heart and Seamus McGarry scored a vital equalising point and in the dying minutes of the match Cormac Ross drove home the winning point. Ryan Stranney’s move from left corner back to centre half back proved crucial – few Letterkenny players got past him.

Much thanks is due to Mr Toner the trainer and the long suffering parents who have had to struggle with late nights and transport.

Next year the team will move into the A league
