Home Economics

Home Economics is a new subject in St Malachy’s College. It is part of the Learning for Life and Work strand of the Northern Ireland curriculum. The department is located under the school’s canteen and is a modern, bright, state of the art facility which cost £250,000. It consists of a Computer suite with fourteen computers, a Practical room with all up to date equipment and a Preparation room.

At present the year 8’s and year 9’s receive a double period for twelve weeks each year as they are in a ‘carousel’ with Employability and Personal development or Citizenship. The main emphasis of this subject is Healthy Eating along with Family Life and Independent Living. Practical work is done every second week and new skills are being developed on a regular basis. Students enjoy their Home Economics especially cooking and eating what they have made!
