On Thursday the 8th October the College was visited by touring Theatre in Education company: Black Cat. Year 12 students were treated to a workshop on Steinbeck’s classic novel Of Mice and Men. With minimal props, costumes and set, the four performers were able to skilfully suggest the Californian ranch setting of the boys’ set text, making the memorable characters of George and Lennie come alive.

Of course, with only four performers, they needed some help from our eager volunteers: Gerard Mc Closkey, Conor Hinds, Liam Henry, Conor Cooper all helped out, but the star performer had to be Rhys Montgomery, whose accent impressed the performers and the audience (even if he did miss his cue!)

In the afternoon, the College Hall was transformed into 12th century Scotland for a fast paced, visually exciting version of Macbeth with all roles played by the four performers with some impressively quick costume changes! The Year Elevens were truly on the edge of their seats – especially for the gory climax of the play. Alex Ramos just had to find out whether Macbeth’s head was really in the sack Macduff held up triumphantly – it was only a paint covered football! Nonetheless, the students enjoyed “suspending their disbelief”.
