"Music plays an important part in the life of Saint Malachy's College..."

Music during the pandemic
Since March 2020, the Music Department has endeavoured to fulfil its mission of inspiring, engaging and nurturing talent, albeit at a distance! In March 2020, we immediately transferred the delivery of all instrumental and vocal lessons to Google Classroom. We also reduced our lesson fees from September 2020. In periods of 'Lockdown', all Music lessons have been delivered “live” via Google Meet.
It is important that our young musicians continue with their normal weekly routine of lessons and practice. We have found that students have become more responsible for their own learning; some have even entered online examinations themselves! And of course, for well-being: the benefits of music for elevating mental health, mood and happiness are well-known and much needed during lockdown.
When schools returned in September 2020, the Music Department was determined to find new ways to safely conduct music performance in accordance with public health advice. We established a reduced extra-curricular programme featuring small groups of socially-distanced musicians and, due to our large practice rooms, we were able to safely accommodate instrumental and vocal lessons with our talented team of Peripatetic Music Teachers.
To give you some insight into our musical activity during October and November 2020, we recorded a short video.
Please get in touch with the Head of Music, Mr David Strange, if you have any queries about Music at the College or Instrumental Music Lessons.
