Unsurpassed Success for St Malachy's Young Filmmakers at Cinemagic

November 30, 2014

Moving Image Arts students from the College came first and second in the 15-17 year old Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Awards at the Crescent Arts Centre on Wednesday 26th of November.

Caolan Caddell came first with "The Hour of our Death", an evocative and heart wrenching depiction of love and tragedy set within the context of the World War II. Mr Gallagher (Head of Moving Image Arts) said that ‘the pace, the setting, the mise-en-scene, the action scenes and the post production and editing were truly outstanding’.

Matthew McGuigan (placed joint second) and was highly commended for his work "High Tide", an expressionistic and poignant exploration of loss and grief.  Mr Gallagher noted that the short film ‘demonstrates outstanding creativity in his use of cinematography, camera framing and choice of locations and directing’.

Mr Gallagher went on to say that ‘this competition is open to young people from the UK, Ireland and indeed throughout the world. To be shortlisted is an accomplishment in itself; for St Malachy's students to lift first and second place is unprecedented and they have brought great credit to the College and themselves, achieving something truly special. To have produced such professional standards, not just in terms of production values, but more importantly in terms of creativity, visual poetry and poignancy at such a young age demonstrates outstanding prospects for these young filmmakers and their future careers in the industry’.

Past pupil Leo McGuigan, who was the last Moving Image Arts student from the College to win this award (in 2012) will be the guest speaker opening CCEA's Showcase on 27th of November, when Caolan and Matthew's films will also feature. Leo’s first full length feature "Braxton" is set to open locally and in the USA in 2015.

Huge congratulations to Caolan, Matthew and their teachers in the Moving Image and Art Departments.
