American Ethnomusicologist Visits LLW Students

December 10, 2019

On 29th November noted American Ethnomusicologist Dr JL Rollins visited the College to be interviewed by the GCSE Learning for Life and Work students.  As part of their Controlled Assessment work on the impact of migration they interviewed Dr Rollins about her experiences living and working in Northern Ireland as an immigrant from the USA.  They were particularly interested on the impact that being an ‘outsider’ had on her research into the music of the Republican movement which was the basis of her PhD and subsequent book. Dr Rollins was very entertaining and generous with her time and shared several stories of cultural misunderstandings she experienced when she first arrived in Ireland, for example, a friend had to explain to her that when people insult you and poke fun –it probably means they like you!
