U16A and U19A Basketball

Local rivals OLSPCK made the short trip to the north side of the city for U16 and U19 All Ireland Regional league games. The U16 game was a well matched affair. Head Coach Mr Molloy was able to rotate his strong bench and play his entire squad. The boys were fresh off a big win in Cork the previous week in the All Ireland Schools Cup quarter final against Presentation College Cork. U16 International Matthew Rooney kept OLSPCK in touch but the greater strength in depth of the St.Malachy's boys was the telling factor. The U19 game saw the older St.Malachy's squad dominate from the tip off. OLPSCK have a young side who will be excellent in a couple of years at senior level. However, they struggled against the power and pace of the St.Malachy's boys who ended up victorious on a 65 - 38 score line.

Water Polo

The senior water polo team won both games in their double header against BRA (7-2) and INST (8-4) in the Canada Trophy. This is a promising start to their campaign and coach Michael McKendry was delighted with the effort of the boys.

U16A and U19A Basketball

The U16 and U19 teams travelled to Dunshauglin Community College, Co.Meath and St.Joseph's Drogheda for a triple header to decide on top spot in the North Eastern section of the All Ireland Regional League. At U19 level, both teams had been undefeated up until this point. However, in their best performance to date, the St.Malachy's boys hit the ground running. Sean Quinn and John Smye were accurate from long range and with Niall McKeown and Josh briers dominating inside, the boys opened up an early lead which they would never relinquish. Corey Ryan Darragh defended exceptionally well and everyone contributed to the 59-37 victory. The U16 team had a comfortable win in Dunshaughlin with Peter Henvey and Niall McGinnity in excellent form, but it was in the group decider against St.Joseph's Drogheda where these students really stepped up their games and showed tremendous leadership. Diarmuid Maguire, Dan Hackett, alongside Conor Cooke and Jack Summersgill kept their best players under pressure while keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The boys ran up victorious on a score line of 63 - 40.

Year 10 Gaelic Football

As a result of topping their qualifying group, the Year 10 squad were paired against St. Ciaran's Ballygawley in the Mid Ulster Sports Arena. The boys fell to the same school last year at the same stage in the competition but history would not repeat itself. Playing against the wind, the boys led 1-6 to 6 points at the half. Despite an early point from St.Ciaran's to cut the advantage to 2 points, St. Malachy's responded in kind with a goal and a succession of points from Sean Stewart, CJ Fulton and Conn Doherty. With Lewis McGarvey battling well in the middle of the field and Conor Ryan putting in an exceptional performance at centre half back, the boys showed flare and tenacity in abundance and ran out comfortable winners in the end on a 5-12 to 1-15 score line. The boys now play St.Pat's Downpatrick who edged out St.Pat's Keady in another quarter final.

Year 8 Football

The Year 8 team had a terrific win in the Belfast Cup against CBS Glen Road. Mr. McStravick's young charges fell behind to an early strike but responded magnificently with goals from Conal McGirr and Caolan McBride. It was a keenly contested encounter which remained in the balance right until the end. Pearse Rogers made a terrific save and then Caolan McBride killed off the spirited challenge of CBS with a fine late strike.

U19B Basketball

Not to be out done, the U19B team won their regional semi final with a superb performance against Aquinas winning 59 - 45. It was a terrific team effort but Brendan Stewart, Jay Moran and Ethan Gibson kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely while Liam Quick controlled the game from the point guard position. Michael McWilliams, Paul Owens and Ruairi McGinn controlled the boards magnificently and thre were also telling contributions from Eamon McKeown, Hans Abraham and Cillian Cumiskey.
