Year 8 classes recently visited Carrickfergus Castle as part of their study of ‘The Normans in Ireland’. On arrival, the boys were led on a guided tour of the site, highlighting reasons for the construction of the castle at Carrickfergus, defensive features and methods of attack. We were also able to explore the battlements which provide an excellent vantage point across Belfast Lough. Particular highlights of the tour included the spiral staircase (luckily we all survived the trip step!) and the opportunities to handle Norman weaponry.
