St Malachy’s College chess players have been taking part in the world’s largest chess competition - the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge. The initial stages were played at lunchtimes here in the school, with players battling through seven rounds until eventually we were left with one winner. Patrick Maguire narrowly defeated Leon Johny in a tense final game, while Joseph Donnelly also finished well as third runner up. Patrick and Joseph went on to compete in the regional Megafinal, where they faced stiff opposition from top players from schools all over Northern Ireland. Patrick enjoyed further success as overall champion in his age category, and is now preparing for the Terafinal in Manchester on 13th July. We wish him the very best of luck!
