Ten students represented the College in the Swim Ulster Schools Cup and Championships in Bangor Aurora on the 21 and 22nd October. The pinnacle of Ulster School swimming had over 1500 competitors over the two days.
For a number of our swimmers it was their first experience of a gala yet not one of our swimmers was overawed by the capacity crowd and all swam their hearts out for the College. On Saturday, Michael Donnelly, Luca Hughes, Mark McCartney, Caolan McCormick and Conor Mullan battled it out in the 11-12yr age group. At the end of a gruelling afternoon session Michael Donnelly and Mark McCartney recorded season best times that meant qualification for the Dublin Schools Championship in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin for the 50m breaststroke and 100m IM respectively. Mark also made the final of the 100m IM on the day.
On Sunday Luke Donnelly, Thomas Leggett, Adam Lundy Glenn, Noel McCartney and Tiarnan McCormick pushed their bodies to the limit in fierce competition. Both Thomas and Noel made it to the finals of the 100m breaststroke narrowly missing out on podium position.
The boys should be proud of how they performed over the weekend. They showed determination and composure and were a credit to the St.Malachy’s. Well done!
